Unpacking the 2024 NAPLAN results - Podcast
The 2024 NAPLAN school test results show one in three Australian students are not on track with their learning.
The results also reveal deep inequities in Australian schools. Indigenous children, children from disadvantaged families, and children from regional and remote areas are falling years behind their more advantaged peers as they move through school.
In this special Grattan Podcast, our NAPLAN specialists Amy Haywood and Nick Parkinson identify why students are performing so poorly, and what governments should do to turn this around so all young Australians gain the literacy and numeracy skills they need to have their best chance in life.

Don't agree with the RBA's independence before an election. Inflation was at unsustainable levels well before May 22 and rates should have gone up months before. The RBA, as it was, protected the LNP until it was obvious there would be a change of govt.

Basically, it's all about "carrot farming" for taxpayers $$$ through government subsidies. Those subsidies should be paid back to taxpayers through ownership shares in the company, like Norway did with its oil. All future profits should then go into a sovereign wealth fund for ALL Australians.

The current system awards 20 points for superior English and 20 points for a PhD. In your proposal, a PhD is worth only 60 points. Why not 90, like the superior English scores? I'm not measuring the complexity of the degree, but quite often a PhD program is about a 6-year commitment (!), which might warrant awarding more than 60 points. The suggested 30 points for a bachelor's degree devalue a doctorate.

Having said that I don’t see how the community language test should be given points at all. It has no contribution and is only done to receive points to get independent PR. Surely if you abolish the PY points you should abolish the community language points

  • @Mustang85635

Truth of the matter is that the points test is giving a lot of PR visas out to people who have in some ways gamed the system with the help of PY to gain skill assessment without ever having worked in the occupation. Once PR is granted most end up doing something else and that’s a big loophole that needs to be closed. If you haven’t worked in your skilled occupation for a year or two you shouldn’t be getting a PR visa. I think that’s the position of the Grattan Institute which I agree with having seen a lot of cases like this.

Its not just high tech employees that are employer sponsored. It's mostly chefs and other low paying jobs that are sponsored. I can't see how keeping all employer sponsored skilled people in same bracket would help to produce better economic outcomes. By ramping up employer sponsored, you might just get more chefs than high income earnings skilled workers if income stratas are not mentioned specifically

PY & NAATI scam must be abolished. There should not be such a big gap of points for someone in 20 vs 40. Points for only 2 years of experience is completely unfair! Age & experience criteria only support young employees with basic experience (2 years doesn’t mean you are an expert), not specialists and older experenced emplyoyees even if they are high earners are written off - very sad, hopefully DOHA has better ideas on this!

Simple and great. Everything should be based on basic principle. The principle that those who are educated, already earn high, have excellent communication skills are more likely to be successful. Rest secondary factors of target occupations could be dealt with separate visas.

A very good analysis indeed. The current system is hurting migrants potential, career choices and future. Many skilled migrants choose careers and places of stay that are not suitable for them just because of these points. It ends up wasting the prime time of their career. I myself know that I could be highly successful in another career and I am so interested in it but just can't switch my career because my skill assessment is in my current subject and I am just staying in this career for permanent residency. I know for sure that I could have a much passionate and innovative career in another field. But, switching would be such a hassle.

The Australian government spends less on educating employers to hire international graduates, and most graduate officer positions are locked for Australian citizens or PR only. Now, your study leads to less diversity and less inclusion of students in Australia and makes the educational environment less inclusive. Sadly, this country will be less creative and culturally diverse in the future. additionally, This could affect the diversity and financial stability of many programs, particularly postgraduate courses that attract older international students.

I agree, we need more high and medium density not just low density like current standings, the reason nimbys are so threatened by density is because their value on their property/ies will decline meaning they won't have the profit they currently have. Mum and dad investors make up 80-85% of investors in this country and so they hold currently a monopoly over the density spectrum and the housing economy (including price gouging renters) so they are on a good deal at the moment, we all know what happens when competition come along a democracy happens and the nimbys have to share...... They are not wanting to share or decline.

Australia scored above the OECD average in mathematics (487), reading (498), and science (507), but its performance has declined over the longer term. Singapore's results are an outlier and may not be replicable for larger, more diverse countries. Comparing against other developed Western nations like the UK, France, and USA could provide more relevant insights for Australia. In mathematics, Australia trailed the UK (502), France (495), and the USA (488). In reading, it outperformed the USA (488) but fell behind the UK (509) and France (504). In science, Australia led the USA (489) but lagged behind the UK (515) and France (510). While Singapore's education system offers valuable lessons, Australia may benefit more from examining policies and practices in comparable Western countries that have outperformed it in certain subjects.

If we tax sugary drinks on health grounds then we should probably include artificial sweetened drinks too given the long term health concerns associated with drinking multiple, say, diet cokes every day. Not as bad for you but if we are discouraging unhealthy, self destructive behavior then a smaller tax on diet sodas, orange juice drinks, etc seems inevitable down the road

It's the PRINCIPLE of the thing to me. If the issue is actually health, then they should have penalties for obesity and/or penalties for ALL unhealthy food. This is mostly political and an attempt to make government bigger.

This is an important and fascinating book, but it is flawed. I have no doubt that her unflattering representation of Orwell is true, and she is right to point out that his male biographers have been deliberately selective in their use of sources, but she never gets to the bottom of Eileen's character. Ultimately the reader is never offered an insight into why this intelligent and spirited woman chose to marry Orwell nor why she continued to tolerate him. The only explanation Funder offers is that patriarchy conditions women to accept their lot. This a reductionist argument and one that avoids the nuances of her subject's character. In Funder's hands, Eileen simply becomes another victim of an enduring socio-cultural phenomenon - hence the title. Given that some of Eileen's friends were divorced and that she herself was clearly a liberal and free-thinking individual, I think Funder needs to come up with a better reason. If you are setting out to write a biography, surely your job is to tell us what makes the subject tick. I learnt more about Orwell from reading this book than I did about Eileen.

So you’re STILL not comparing apples to apples. To determine any ACTUAL gender pay gap there might be, you need to compare men and women with equal experience doing equal jobs. You’re comparing broad averages, which are meaningless. I love the example she used of the financial company - their base pay is the same, but when overtime and bonuses are considered, the men make more. Do the men work more OT than the women? That’s kind of important to consider, don’t you think? Doesn’t seem a big shock - if you work more and get overtime, you make more. If you work more overtime, you’re also more likely to get a bonus.

Here are my thoughts on this topic. People seem to have forgotten about the Landlords, who have taken a very large risk to hopefully many years down the track, they can sell and make some coin. My take is that many Landlords have made some serious good capital gains around COVID time. They are currently being pumped from pillar to post by the media about how they are the cause of the problem. They also have all the state government going crazy with rental reforms - Canberra has crazy high land tax and also rent controls which isn't helping. It costs a bomb to rent here. Landlords around Australia have gone, thanks for the large capital gains, I will cash out and pay down any debt that i am carrying or invest into Super or the share market. Guess what, no annoying issues from government or the media. Renters suddenly have a very large problem, and it doesn't appear to be improving any time soon.

There are some good employers and there are a lot of employers who take advantage. They know you have a dream to get PR and if you complain to any or their request, you risk going home. Speaking out and standing for yourself makes things worse. The usual path for a migrant is you start as a student. Then you beg an employer to sponsor you for a 482 visa. Of course you get the short end of the stick with negotiations. If you are lucky to get sponsored, you are at the mercy of the employer. After 23 months, they will tell you they decide not to sponsor you for 186 visa. It baffles me why you need to get sponsored twice to get PR. All the power goes to the employer

PISA is a good example of one of one of those things people do not need and no one wants to grade. I have never touched a PISA exam or test and do not see any reason for why anybody else should. If a man wants to take a PISA poll or exam, let him do it, but do not ask him to submit it for grading. Stop asking people to submit these things.
